Coffee a popular beverage which we drink as of now came to be because a a goat herder Kaldi was observant enough to notice that some goats after eating the coffee cherries became so energetic that they could not sleep at night. He took the cherry to a Monk who initially got furious and threw it into fire, but the aroma that emanated was so delicious that he brewed it and drank the liquid and attested to its energizing qualities, thus began the origin of what we call coffee today.
It is said that this story was only told about 800 years after the discovery of coffee so it may well be a myth, perhaps it is but the most important take away from this piece I am about to write is that being observant may often lead you to your destined path in life.
Coffee first originated from Ethiopia, where the above story was told, the observation of one goat header led to the discovery of the worlds most popular drink. By the 15th Century, coffee was been traded in the Arabian peninsula, had began to make its way across the Globe. Yemeni is one the first place where it was grown and traded before it made its way to Turkey, Egypt and Syria.
Till today Yemeni coffee remains one of the best tasting coffee there is, infact it is so wonderful that one entrepreneur took it upon himself to introduce the Yemeni coffee as a tool for evangelizing to the world that there is more to Yemeni than it has come to be known for in recent times.
Coffee became so popular that travelers were collecting seedlings and travelling to their places to plant them. I think I am most thrilled about the story of how coffee came to Brazil, it was told of how the Emperor commanded Francisco Mello del Palheta to get some seedlings from the French people who were not willing to share, but his good looks earned him the favor of the French governors wife who buried some seeds inside a bouquet of Flowers which she gave to him. The seeds he brought back gave birth to all the coffee you can get from Brazil today.
The beautiful thing about coffee is that it s not just a drink but it has become a special drink which helps people to relax, socialize and perhaps birth more businesses and relationships.
Stories have been told of how an idea hit a person while having coffee with a colleague or even how a conversation in a coffee shop has led to great relationships.
In a coming series of posts, we will be exploring the different single origin coffees and noting what their peculiarities are. Hope you will be here to contribute to this post
